How to Get the Perfect Burn Every Time

There’s a difference between lighting a candle… and creating a moment.
A well-made candle is meant to slow you down, shift the energy in a room, and turn even the most ordinary night into something intentional.
But here’s the part most people miss:
how you burn your candle directly affects how it performs, smells, and lasts.
If you’ve ever dealt with tunneling, weak scent, or uneven burns, this guide will help you create the right atmosphere to burn your candles and treat them with love so they will burn like your love for
Why Candle Care Matters
Candle care isn’t about rules, it’s about getting the best possible burn, scent throw, and longevity from your candle.
At Rebel & Eve, our candles are crafted with luxury coconut wax, which is known for:
-
A clean, smooth, even burn
-
Strong, consistent scent throw
-
A more elevated, slow-burning experience
But even the best wax needs the right burn habits to perform at its peak. A lot of times, candles can be dismissed as "bad candles" or not burn right, but sometimes the conditions are exacerbating the situation, and it's really a great candle that just needs a little extra love.
1. The First Burn Sets Everything
The very first time you light your candle is the most important. It is going to set the stage for how your candle burns all the way down.
Let it burn long enough for the wax to fully melt across the surface (edge to edge). This usually takes:
-
2–4 hours, depending on the size
Why this matters:
-
Prevents tunneling
-
Creates an even memory burn for future uses
If you rush this step, your candle will likely tunnel for the rest of its life. Coconut wax candles will usually have a little bit of hang up, or unburned was, around the edge of the jar on the first few burns, and this is totally normal. As the candle burns further down, the candle will burn hotter, melting off the wax around the edges and giving a nice clean melt pool.
2. Trim Your Wick (Every Time)
Before each burn, trim your wick to about 1/4 inch.
This helps:
-
Prevent soot
-
Keep the flame controlled
-
Avoid that “mushroom” buildup
A properly trimmed wick = a cleaner, more beautiful burn.
If you want to feel fancy, you can use a wick trimmer to trim the carbon buildup off the end, as it is designed to dip into the jar, and really, just to feel fancy!
3. Don’t Overburn
As tempting as it is to leave your candle going all night—don’t.
Stick to:
-
3–4 hours per burn session
This prevents:
-
Overheating the wax
-
Wick instability
-
Diminished scent performance
Think of it as preserving the quality of your ritual.
4. Watch Your Placement
Where you place your candle matters more than you think.
Avoid:
-
Drafts (windows, fans, vents)
-
Uneven surfaces
Drafts can cause:
-
Uneven burning
-
Excess soot
-
Flickering flames
For the best experience, place your candle somewhere calm and undisturbed—just like the moment you’re creating.
5. Extinguish with Intention
Instead of blowing out your candle, use a candle snuffer if you can.
Why:
-
Reduces smoke
-
Keeps the wick centered
-
Maintains a cleaner scent experience
It’s a small shift that makes the whole ritual feel more elevated.
6. Know When to Let It Go
Stop burning your candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains.
This helps:
-
Prevent overheating the container
-
Maintain safety
A well-loved candle should be finished intentionally—not forced to the very last drop. If you do want to use your candle to the very last moment, consider using a candle warmer lamp to heat up the last of the wax to safely use the last bit of your candle.
Turn Your Candle Into a Ritual
This is where everything shifts.
Your candle isn’t just there to smell good—it’s there to mark a moment.
Try this:
-
Light your candle at the same time each evening
-
Pair it with your current read
-
Add a playlist or a cup of tea
-
Let it signal the transition from “doing” to “being”
Even 20 minutes can reset your entire mood.
The Difference You’ll Notice
When you follow these simple steps, you’ll get:
-
A longer-lasting candle
-
A cleaner, more even burn
-
Stronger scent throw
-
A more intentional, elevated experience
It’s not about doing more—it’s about doing it better.
